How to Use Up Leftover Bread

I’ve seen all the recommendations for using up leftover bread, the most famous ones being breadcrumbs and croutons.

But I don’t use breadcrumbs and I’ve never been happy with my homemade croutons, so I usually just make toast with peanut butter and jelly and call it good.

Sometime after I made successful pita chips (with this popcorn seasoning), I ended up with a crust of dry, homemade white bread. I thought I’d use the pita chip method on the bread and see what happened.

What happened was the best homemade croutons I’ve ever eaten. (Which also elevated that day’s lunch salad to new heights. It was fabulous!)

Score [another] one for that popcorn seasoning!

The white bread made significantly better croutons than whole wheat bread (but if you like whole wheat croutons, more power to you! I’ll just save these for an occasional treat :) )

Homemade Croutons with Popcorn Seasoning

  • homemade white bread, cut or torn into cubes
  • olive oil
  • popcorn seasoning (recipe linked to above)

  1. Brush a small amount of olive oil on each bread cube.
  2. Sprinkle with popcorn seasoning.
  3. Bake at 375 for 5-7 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
  4. You may want to have your salad ready to go before you make these, or you might not have any left by the time you get your salad together. ;)

Do you make homemade croutons? What’s your method?
